大学での英語教師ボランティア、最終日 ～アクティヴィティー編～

前回（#35）にて大学での英語教師ボランティアの最終日の様子を書かせていただきました。
今回はその最後の授業の内容をみなさんとシェアしたいと思います。
大体週末は結構な学生が働いているか、インターンシップをしているかで半分以下の学生しか来ることができないのが現状です。
今回も例外ではありませんでした。
しかしながら、なんとそのうちの何人かは仕事などが終わってから授業に駆けつけてくれました。
もう授業中に泣きそうになってしまいました。
授業の最初は英語を使った仕事と必要とされるレベルについて話し合いました。
そして次のアクティヴィティーへ。
私は大学へ行く前に通訳の仕方を学ぶために語学学校へ行きました。
その時のリスニングの材料がUSBに残っていたのでそれを使うことにしました。
通訳で必要なことはなにか。
A)話者が伝えたい内容をきちんと伝えること、B)ほぼすべての単語を聞き取ること。
そして場合によっては数分間聞き続け、ようやく通訳を開始できることもあります。どうすればよいか、メモを取るしかないですね。
メモを取りながら聞き取る、というのは簡単ではありません。専用のトレーニングをこなさない限り帰国子女かどうかにかかわらず、失敗してしまいます。
まず学生に通訳をやらせてみてどれくらい難しいかを理解させました。そしてその後に私がどうやって使い物になるメモを通訳中に取るかを実践で見せてあげました。
前回の通訳から数年間が経っていたので、昔のように優れたメモを取ることができませんでしたが、彼らを驚かすには上出来な模様でした。
普段目にすることのない通訳の技術、これは彼らにとっていい経験だったと思います。
実際に英語が通訳者によってどのように使われるのかを見せてあげることで彼らを刺激できたのでは、
と願っております。
授業の最後に今回のコースは彼らの夢に近づくための一歩に過ぎない、と言い聞かせました。
仕事で使えるレベルの英語力にたどり着くのは簡単ではない、ということを学んでくれたと思います。
しかし私は彼らを信じています。これからも学び続け、いつかそこまでたどり着いてくれることでしょう。
もちろん私も彼らからの質問にはいつでも答えるつもりです。

Activities on The Last Day of the English Teaching Volunteer at the University

I wrote about how the last day of my English teaching volunteer at a university ended in the last post (#35).
This time I would like to share with you what activities I did on that day.
Typically on the weekends, a lot of my students work or intern somewhere so less than a half of them can make it to the class.
This time was not an exception. However some of my students came to the class as soon as they were done with stuff to do.
This is so, so, so impressive and made me almost cry in class.
At first we had a class discussion about jobs where you use English and what level of English is required for each one.
Then moving on to a next activity.
Before going to college, I went to a language school to learn how to interpret.
I found some materials from there, saved in my USB, so I decided to utilize them.
What is important in interpretation?
Well, you have to A). convey exactly what a speaker wants to communicate, and B). catch almost every single word.
Also sometimes you have no choice but to keep listening for a few minutes, and start interpreting.
How would you remember what the speaker said? Well, you must take memos.
It is surely difficult to take memos over listening to a person. Without any training, you can fail no matter if you are fluent in the language spoken or not.
I let them do it at first for them to understand how difficult it is, and then showed them how to take useful memos for interpretation.
It had been a while since I last interpreted, so I was not able to do that as well as I wanted, but I think it was good enough to impress my students.
That must have been refreshing to them because they have zero opportunities to see interpretation in front of them.
I hope I motivated them a lot by showing how to use English at work as an interpreter.
After showing them an example of taking memos, we did dictation and shadowing, so that they can learn grammar, pronunciation, and intonation of English.
I told them in the end that the course was just 1 step to take to get closer to their dreams.
I believe they learned that reaching the level of English used at work is not that easy. However, I've got faith in them. I am sure they will keep learning and make it in the future.
Of course I am open for questions from them all the time.
I also hope that they will get a hold of me from time to time!
