ラパスでの先生の日
ラパスでは教師陣が働かなくていい日があります。それが先生の日です。
私は、その前の週に生徒から授業があるかないか聞かれましたので、やりたいならできますし、休みたいならやらなくてもいいですよという内容を伝えました。
私の生徒たちはみなやりたいということでしたので、やることに落ち着きました。
そして当日、私が教室へ行ってみんなを待っていますと、いつも通り生徒たちがやってき始めました。
なんと生徒たちは授業に来る前にこの日は普通ではない特別の授業として、みんなでピザを食べに行くということを決めていらっしゃったのです。
この国の生徒と先生の距離感には大変感激されます。
私は日本での先生と学生との距離感はわかりかねますが、自分の生徒たちに囲まれていかにも友達のようにピザを食べながら会話ができるというのは、なかなかいい雰囲気でございます。
お言葉に甘えまして、私は生徒たちとピザを一緒に食べ、ピザや食料に関する単語や注文時などに使えそうな英語などを教えながら大変良い時間を過ごしました。
このような素敵な文化があるので、ボリビアがまた好きになりました。
是非ともボランティアの方々にもこのような素敵なボリビアの文化に浸ってもらいたいものだと思います。

Teachers Day at Universidad Mayr de San Andres
There is a day here when teachers do not work, teachers day.
My students asked me last week if we were going to have a class on that day.
I said “well, if you guys want to have a class, we can. If you don’t we don’t have to. Totally up to you
guys.” Since my students are so motivated to learn English, they decided to do a class.
But they wanted to do something more unusual, and go outside.
Today I went into the classroom, waiting for my students to show up and I started to have aconversation when they showed up like always.
They had decided to go out for lunch together, so we all went out to a restaurant and ordered a whole pizza.
What surprised me a lot was the closeness you can have with your students.
In Japan, professors and teachers kind of have distance from students.
In the US, they are more friendly and more like (sometimes) friends, but I personally have never gone out with any professor of mine.
Here in La Paz, they really appreciate the existence of professors and teachers, and they seem to want to have a close relationship.
I took them up on it, and had so much fun hanging out with them.
This appreciation day for professors is something that did not exist in mind.
I really enjoyed it, appreciated that my students did something amazing for me, and got to know
more about Bolivian culture and love it more.
